http://documents.law.yale.edu/johnson-william-samuelCoincidence of lectures in Litchfield notebooks: students recording the same lecture, organized alphabetically by title or subject
Where the name of the lecturer is missing, the student has made no note of it. In some cases I have supplied the lecturer’s name when it is found in the text, as “Mr. Gould (or more commonly, Mr. G.) says,” or “according to J. Reeve.” In the lectures on Executor & Administrator, where both Reeve and Gould are listed, Reeve gave an introductory lecture, followed by Gould’s detailed presentation.
Where the number of lectures is not indicated, the title was written continuously, sometimes broken by descriptive subheads, such as “slaves”, “apprentices”, “menial workers,” “day laborers,” and “factors, brokers, agents” within the title of Master & Servant.
Where an end date is given, that is the only recorded date within the title and this might represent the date on which the student finished copying a title into his notebook, as opposed to the date he heard lectures.
When a title in this list appears only once, for example, Inns & Innkeepers, it does not mean that it is the sole documentation of that title, but that only one student gave this title a reliable date. It can also mean that the topic was incorporated and treated as part of a major title, as writs of error is generally found within Pleas & Pleadings.
