Averill, William Holt

Author:
Averill, William Holt
Birth Date:
1794-07-08
Death Date:
1873-08-17
Notes:
Two folders of notes, not well organized, in box 3 of the papers are labeled "notes on law, abstracts of precedents." The notes are not paginated and with a few exceptions, are not dated. Titles included are Lex Mercatoria, bills of exchange & promissory notes, pleas & pleadings, bills of exception; evidence by James Gould, devises, alienation by deed; action of debt, detinue & account; private wrongs, arbitrament & award, contracts and municipal law. It is difficult to know which, if any, of these titles are complete. The pages are untrimmed and there is little internal organization in the way of headings. Titles are written in different hands and, given the duplication of certain topics, it may be that they are notes of more than one student.
Provenance:
Averill's (or Averell's) notes are part of the Averell family papers of the N.Y. Historical Association Library in Cooperstown, N.Y., where Averill was born in 1794. The collection also contains correspondence from Averill's friends, including the artist George Caitlin, who mentions other mutual friends, Henry Cowles, William F. Sargent, Hiram, Hunt, John Philpott Curran Sampson, and Samuel Hinkley Robbins, all at Litchfield in 1817.
